As a young man In the mid 70's I was fortunate enough to assist my father and my Aunt before, during, and, after their open houses on Sunday afternoons as realators.
My aunt worked for Tarbell Realty & my father worked for E.G. Stassens, both of which were highly successful realtors in Portland Oregon.
Then something took place that changed how open houses were marketed from that day forward within those companies...
A Rape Changed the industry overnight
My aunt and my father were top producing realtors in Portland Oregon, and I assisted the two of them and many of the other realtors to include staging open houses, putting up signs at new listings, handing out fliers door to door, etc., etc., etc.
Then one day everything changed. It took a while before I put it all together, because as a young man, adults didn't share "bad news" with young people my age (I was about 12 or 13 at the time).
A female realtor had been Raped Repeatedly for hours at an open house and she was almost killed.
I finally put two and two together as to why most of the ladies were scared to hold open houses and show buyers listings from then on!
Whether or not something like this had happened in Portland or other cities across America prior I don't know, but I do know that from that day forward I no longer staged or held open houses and that it became mandatory that the female realtors ride with at least one other person to all showings.
